He quit college when he was 20, calling his first album The College Dropout. But Kanye West has finally graduated.
He's been given an honorary degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
That's right, not just any old degree, a doctorate. It means he's now technically Doctor West.
He was recognised for 'transformative, genre-defying work' at a ceremony there.
But the man who doesn't usually seem to lack confidence admitted he did feel the nerves.

Kanye West is a jerk.
I’d use another word for “jerk” but this is a USA TODAY website and we try to keep it PG-13 around here. I’m not arguing that fact. West proved that again this past week in the media circus surrounding the release of his new Yeezy 3 fashion collection and his new album, The Life of Pablo. First there was West’s tweet proclaiming Bill Cosby’s innocence, which was at best a jerk-y stunt to provoke the public and at worst a really misguided and stupid thing to say.
Then there was his line in the song Famous about Taylor Swift in which he proclaimed “I made that famous” and then, after the predictable backlash, refused to apologize, claimed that Swift herself gave her “blessings” on the song, and then said it was Swift herself who first said — at a dinner party that West did not attend — that he made her famous.
Or, to put it more simply: West put a dumb, misogynistic line in a song and refused to apologize for it. West behaved like a jerk, as he has many times before in his career. He’s self-involved and weird and has acted irrationally and, at least to the public, doesn’t seem like the type of dude you’d want to crack a beer with or have over to watch a football game.
He’s also a genius and the most important artist of the last 20 years, which makes this whole thing very complicated indeed.
My colleague at USA TODAY Patrick Ryan wrote an article headlined “Is Kanye West the greatest artist of the 21st century?” and while he was much more diplomatic and journalistic about answering the question, I will come out and say: Yes. Yes he is. West has pushed hip hop, fashion, music in general, and pop culture especially more than anyone in that time. He’s provoked us, challenged us, exposed our hypocrisy (while definitely spouting a lot of his own), and made himself a living art installation.
He married the most notorious woman in the world, one who got that notoriety through scandal. He became part of her family, the most notorious family in America. He made them part of his art, as he showed on Thursday when he had them enter ahead of him into Madison Square Garden, decked in white, America’s devils dressed up as angels.
Then he plugged an aux cord into his phone and played an aggressive, stabbing synth-laden gospel album, all while hundreds of African American models stood dead still in his clothing, and then he showed a video game he is building that shows his deceased mother ascending into heaven.

The video game moment was one that reminded me a lot of a previous moment in West’s career — when he released his album 808s and Heartbreak. That was also a piece of art that was about the death of his mother, and it was also one that was greeted with incomprehension by the public when it was released. Kanye, the rapper who did the “insecrurrrr” thing and sped up soul samples, gave us a bleak, minimalist synth album that featured him singing in Auto-Tune. No one knew what to do with it. Tepid reviews came in.
Then we listened more and more. It grew and grew on us. The sing-song rapping, the bleak assessment of personal failures, the ideas that West pioneered on the album, they became rap mainstays. Drake released a mixtape cut over the beat of the first song Say You Will, then modeled his entire career off the mood and vibe off an album that West released, then moved on from just as quickly.
I remember vividly the first time I listened to 808s and Heartbreak, an experience that seems hard to describe now because the album seems so normal in hindsight. The entire rap world bent to something that West culled out of his brain, picking up pieces of minimalism and T-Pain and making something unexpected and dark and new.
The video game moment was a moment like that. I had no idea what to do with it. It was so out there, so weird, that it made a lot of people uncomfortable. The theater I was in burst into laughter when he described it.
But there it was, his mother in 32-bit animation, getting her wings and flying into the clouds. He showed it once to nervous laughter. Then he showed it again. He played it back. The nervous laughter went away. Instead we watched the digital representation of his mother ascending, and the strings swelled, and we saw the beauty in it. I did, at least. The theater went silent. It was totally ridiculous, totally original, and there we were, moved. How did he do it?
